Guanaja stands out as the most hilly, lush, unspoiled and sparsely populated island of the three major bay islands of Honduras. It is located about 10 miles / 16 kilometers east of Roatán and stretches over a length of about 11 miles / 17.5 kilometers with a width of just under 2.5 miles / 4 kilometers. There is only one road on the island, which runs from Savannah Bight in the east to Mangrove Bight in the west. All transportation is by boat across the sea.

Christopher Columbus made a stop here during his fourth expedition to the New World. Like the other Bay Islands, Guanaja was once under British control and was mainly inhabited by pirates, outlaws and African slaves. The island and its cays, which mark the end of the Mesoamerican barrier reef, are protected as a World Heritage Site and thus offer divers, snorkelers and those seeking relaxation an ideal retreat away from mass tourism.
