Located around 29 km from the Honduran mainland port of La Ceiba, the island is one of the smallest of the Bay Islands, measuring 11 km long and 4 km wide at its widest point. It is surrounded by an extensive coral reef with a species-rich underwater world and offers divers and snorkelers unique dive sites.

Utila is largely uninhabited and consists of a wet savannah landscape, mangrove forest and Caribbean dry forest. The small fishing village of East Harbour (Utila Town) has a population of around 4000. Utila is famous for the fact that the legendary treasure of Henry Morgan is said to be buried somewhere on the island.
